Abstract generation in progress

The largest stock exchange in the United States, Nasdaq, has submitted an ambitious proposal to the SEC (U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission) to revolutionize the way stock transactions and trading products are settled. This proposal focuses on implementing blockchain technology into the posting-to-ledger system for tokenized securities—digital versions of equities and exchange-traded products (ETPs) listed on the Nasdaq platform. With this move, Nasdaq aims to create a more efficient and modern trading ecosystem.

Transforming Transaction Settlement with Blockchain Technology

The tokenized securities proposed by Nasdaq will retain all the same rights and CUSIP identifiers as conventional stocks but can be transacted and settled at much higher speeds. The ledger posting system will leverage DTC’s (Depository Trust Company) distributed ledger platform, which integrates blockchain technology to record and verify each transaction in real-time.

The main advantage of this approach is the ability to achieve near-instant settlement, known in the financial industry as T+0. Unlike traditional systems that require T+2 (two business days), automatic ledger posting will significantly reduce credit and operational risks.

Benefits of Automated Posting and SEC Regulatory Framework

Nasdaq’s proposal includes mechanisms to prevent liquidity fragmentation—a common issue when the same securities are traded across multiple venues at different prices. With a centralized ledger posting system, all transactions will be recorded in a single source of truth, maintaining price consistency and market integrity.

SEC approval of this proposal will determine the continuation of this initiative. If approved by regulators, Nasdaq targets the launch of the ledger posting scheme for tokenized securities by the end of Q3 2026, or approximately 8-9 months from now. This move not only accelerates settlement but also opens opportunities for broader adoption of blockchain technology within traditional capital market infrastructure.
