PLA military exercises verify combat readiness, responses from the Presidential Office and Ministry of National Defense
The focus of this PLA military exercise is to verify the troops’ combat capabilities. The drills include combat readiness patrols and blockades of important ports and key areas. During this time, PLA ships and aircraft will operate in close proximity to Taiwan’s main island.
In response to China’s sudden military provocation, Taiwan’s Presidential Office spokesperson, Guo Yahui, said that China is openly challenging international law and the international order. The ROC military and national security agencies have already fully monitored the situation in advance to ensure the safety of the country and its people.
The Ministry of National Defense also stated that it has established an emergency response center according to regulations, dispatched appropriate forces, and conducted immediate readiness exercises to defend sovereignty.

China’s dissatisfaction with Japan and the Lai government, tensions escalate among Japan, China, and Taiwan
China’s military exercises around the Taiwan Strait are seen as a strong response by Beijing to the regional political situation.
Japanese media NHK analyzed that, in addition to continuing to exert military pressure on the Lai Qingde administration, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Sato’s recent responses in Parliament regarding “Taiwan issues” also triggered strong protests from China.
The Chinese PLA claims that this exercise is a necessary action to safeguard national sovereignty and reunification.
Recently, Japan-China relations have hit a freezing point. The Chinese government has lodged strong protests against Japan and issued travel warnings. In early December, there was also an incident where Chinese fighter jets radar-locked Japanese aircraft, and Beijing accused Tokyo of harassing its forces during training exercises, indicating that geopolitical frictions are continuing to escalate.

Chinese military exercises led by new commander, also a response to US-Taiwan arms sales
Since U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan in 2022, Beijing has frequently increased the intensity of military drills around the Taiwan Strait.
According to BBC, in April this year, China’s PLA conducted simulated strikes on key ports and energy facilities, and published a comic calling Lai Qingde a parasite.
Eight months later, the new commander of the Eastern Theater Command, Yang Zhibin, led this “Justice Mission-2025” exercise, marking his first large-scale command since taking office in October.
Additionally, a researcher from the Chinese Academy of Military Sciences revealed to the media that this exercise is also a response to the recent U.S. approval of arms sales to Taiwan worth a total of 11.1 billion USD, including tactical network systems, which China views as provocative acts of integrating Taiwan’s military into the U.S. military operational system.
