Co-founder of Ethereum, Vitalik Buterin, along with researcher Toni Wahrstätter, proposed EIP-7983, aiming to limit gas consumption levels at the protocol level to enhance network security and performance. This proposal sets a maximum gas limit of 16.77 million for individual transactions, helping to reduce the risk of denial-of-service attack (DoS) and improve the stability of the network.
This limit also encourages the splitting of large transactions, enhancing compatibility with the unknown virtual machine (zkVM). Although there is no backward compatibility for transactions exceeding the limit, most current transactions still fall below this level, minimizing the impact on users. Buterin has called for simplifying the Ethereum protocol to increase efficiency and security, aiming for a leaner design in the future.
