So I just fell down this rabbit hole reading about John McAfee and honestly, the whole thing is absolutely wild. You know, the antivirus guy from the 80s? His story gets so much stranger than just business success.
McAfee started his company in 1987 and it blew up fast. By the late 80s he was making millions, and when Intel bought him out in 2010 for 7.7 billion, he should've had it all figured out. But then 2008 happened and he lost most of his fortune, going from 100 million down to 4 million. That's rough.
Here's where it gets interesting though. He moves to Belize looking for a fresh start, but instead gets caught up in some serious drama. His neighbor ends up dead in 2012, he becomes a suspect, and basically goes on the run. The guy literally fakes a heart attack to avoid extradition and escapes to Guatemala. It's like something out of a movie.
But the most unexpected part? He meets Janice Dyson in Miami Beach around this time. She was working as a prostitute, and somehow they just connect. Despite being 36 years apart in age (he's 71, she's 34 at the time), they get married in 2013. Everyone's shocked by it, but they actually stick together through absolutely insane circumstances.
They're basically fugitives for years. McAfee's facing tax evasion charges, cryptocurrency fraud accusations, the whole thing. He owes over 4 million in taxes he never reported. Janice Dyson stands by him the entire time though, making public statements defending him, even when things get really dark. There's this incident where she's supposedly told to drug him for a kidnapping plot. Their Colorado property gets sold at a massive loss. It's chaos.
Eventually McAfee gets arrested at Barcelona airport in October 2020. He's in a Spanish prison facing potential extradition to the US for 30 years. Then on June 23, 2021, he's found dead in his cell. Officials call it suicide immediately.
But here's the thing that gets everyone talking: Janice Dyson completely rejects that story. She says he was in good spirits, had talked about legal strategies that day, and was worried about being killed, not about killing himself. He had a tattoo that said WHACKD. She's been fighting ever since to get answers, pushing for independent autopsies, staying in Spain for over a year trying to get his body released.
The whole situation has spawned all these conspiracy theories. People compare it to Epstein, there's this mysterious Q image that supposedly had a hidden cryptographic key, Telegram channels dedicated to the mystery. Netflix made a documentary about it. Whether you believe the official story or not, the way Janice Dyson has fought for the truth is pretty remarkable.
She's kept his social media active, shared their story, challenged the Spanish legal system. She's basically become the keeper of his legacy, making sure people remember not just the controversial stuff but also his actual impact on technology. It's this whole thing about resilience and loyalty that's honestly kind of moving when you think about it.
The McAfee story is one of those things that makes you realize how complicated people's lives can actually be. Success, scandal, love against the odds, mystery, and then someone fighting to keep the truth alive. Janice Dyson's part in all this is way more interesting than people realize.
