Just realized so many people are struggling with updating their SASSA details - especially if you need to add banking details for SASSA R350 or other grants. Let me break down what actually works because the process is different depending on which grant you're on.
For permanent grants (old age, disability, child support), you can't do this online - you have to go to your nearest SASSA office in person. Bring your original ID and a recent bank statement (not older than 3 months) or a letter from your bank confirming the account is active and in your name. They'll give you a form to fill out, and it usually takes up to 21 working days to process. Pro tip: submit before the 15th of the month if you want it to take effect the next month, otherwise you'll wait another cycle.
But if you're on the SRD R370 grant, it's way easier - everything is online through their portal. You enter your ID number, they send you a link via SMS, and you just add your new banking details there. The verification takes a few days to a couple weeks though.
Phone number changes work similarly - permanent grants need an office visit, but SRD has an online contact portal where you can update it yourself. Just watch out for fake websites trying to scam you. Use the official SASSA links only.
If the online thing isn't working, call 0800 60 10 11 or just go to the office. Sometimes it's faster than dealing with the portal anyway. Anyone else had issues updating their details?
