Just spent way too much time researching affordable and safe places to live in the US, and honestly, the results surprised me. Everyone talks about how you can't find cities that nail both cheap rent and low crime, but there are actually solid options if you know where to look.
Ohio is basically dominating this space - seven of the top 15 cheapest and safest places are there. New Philadelphia tops the list with a population around 17,500, home values averaging $186k, and you're looking at roughly $1,100 monthly mortgage payments. The violent crime rate is pretty low at 0.69 per 1,000 residents. Total annual cost of living sits around $35,500, which is genuinely affordable.
New Ulm, Minnesota is another solid contender if you want a safe affordable place to live. Smaller town of about 14,000 people, homes averaging $222k, and the violent crime rate is impressively low at 0.29 per 1,000. Monthly mortgage around $1,316, annual living costs hit $36,361.
What caught my attention is how these cities balance things differently. San Elizario, Texas has the lowest home values on the list ($167k average) with incredibly low violent crime (0.10 per 1,000), though it's a smaller community at just over 10,000 people. Then you've got places like Columbus, Indiana - bigger population at 51k - still offering affordable living at $40,400 annually with minimal violent crime.
The Midwest really seems to have the sweet spot for this. Beyond Ohio, you've got Yorktown in Indiana, Butler in Pennsylvania, Trenton in Michigan - all offering that balance of safe affordable neighborhoods without breaking the bank. Trenton especially has a livability score of 86, which is solid.
If you're willing to go a bit higher on costs, places like Edwardsville, Illinois or North Ridgeville, Ohio push toward $44-45k annually but offer even better livability scores (90 and 75 respectively) and consistently low crime rates.
The data here comes from FBI crime statistics, Census records, and Zillow data, so it's pretty legit. If you're seriously considering relocating to find safe affordable places to live without draining your savings, these cities are definitely worth a deeper dive. The smaller towns especially offer that quieter lifestyle while keeping your budget intact.
