Over the past few decades, the software industry has essentially kept inventing different workbenches for different professions: documents, spreadsheets, design, BI, legal, healthcare, trading terminals…
These systems’ default premise is that people operate them in person.
And what LLM-based agents truly have a chance to rewrite isn’t just the search box, but the entire set of assumptions.
Today, the most successful area is still coding, because code is the most structured and easiest to verify, so the IDE was the first thing to be redesigned.
But the real big opportunity isn’t the next AI IDE,
it’s the next vertical editor that has been agent-native.
There’s still a whole software world that hasn’t been rewritten.
