I was just wondering who actually owns the most Bitcoins—and the answer is pretty fascinating. Satoshi Nakamoto, the mysterious creator of Bitcoin, holds an estimated 1.1 million BTC, which amounts to an incredible fortune. This didn't happen by chance; Satoshi was literally the first miner and mined over 22,000 blocks starting from January 2009, earning the corresponding block rewards.
What impresses me the most: these 1.1 million Bitcoins are spread across about 22,000 different addresses. And here’s the wild part—none of them have ever really moved, aside from a few test transactions. With current prices around $67,000 per coin, we're talking about astronomical sums. Satoshi left the project in 2010, and since then, there has been silence.
But Satoshi isn't the only one with massive Bitcoin holdings. The Winklevoss twins invested early after their Facebook settlement in 2008 and are estimated to hold around 70,000 BTC today. Tim Draper, this legendary VC, was also an early investor—though he lost 40,000 BTC in the Mt. Gox hack, he bought another 29,656 BTC in 2014 for $18.7 million.
Michael Saylor of MicroStrategy is also interesting—he revealed in 2020 that he personally owns 17,732 BTC, and as a committed Bitcoin bull, he has probably added more since then. And then there are the institutions: MicroStrategy holds over 628,000 BTC, BlackRock over 738,000, and Grayscale over 180,000. The distribution of Bitcoin holdings is truly a fascinating chapter in crypto history.
