Recently, I compared products from various rice cooker manufacturers, and I was really surprised by how many options there are. Zojirushi, Tiger, Panasonic, Iris Ohyama—every brand seems to put a lot of effort into their products. The prices range widely from a few thousand yen to over 100,000 yen, so I think many people might be confused about what criteria to use when choosing.
When I actually looked at some of the top popular models, I found that there are surprisingly common points. Most manufacturers are trying to balance "easy maintenance" and "delicious rice." Many models focus on just two parts that need washing, which probably reflects user needs. Since it's something used every day, if cleaning is a hassle, people won't keep using it.
What caught my attention when comparing top rice cooker models is that the taste difference between high-end models and mid-range models isn't that big. Zojirushi's pressure IH rice cooker costs over 100,000 yen, but Iris Ohyama's models under 50,000 yen also deliver comparable flavor expansion. Of course, there are differences in texture and other details, but considering cost performance, there are quite a few good options.
Ultimately, the most important factors when choosing a rice cooker are what kind of rice you like and how much effort you want to put into maintenance. Expensive brands aren't always the right choice, and there are plenty of mid-range models that cook delicious rice just as well. For those about to start cooking rice, I think it's best to decide on these two points first when comparing brands before making a choice.
