Jack Dorsey’s new long article: Replacing hierarchical coordination with AI to reshape human organizational structures
Jinse Finance reports that on April 1, Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey and Roelof Botha co-authored a long-form piece, “From Hierarchy to Intelligence” (From Hierarchy to Intelligence), outlining why using AI to replace human hierarchical coordination will become a common pattern for future organizations, and concluding the long-standing hierarchical dependency of more than 2,000 years. Their core viewpoints are as follows:
Over the past 2,000-plus years, organizational design has been built on a hierarchical system (Hierarchy). This structure stems from the military and industrial eras and is mainly constrained by the fact that the human “span of control” typically can only effectively manage 3–8 people. At its essence, the hierarchical system is an “information routing protocol,” but as the number of hierarchy levels increases, it will significantly slow down the flow of information and the speed of decision-making. Block is trying to completely replace the function of human hierarchical coordination with AI, transforming the company from a “hierarchical organization” into “a company built as agents.” Value will shift from hierarchy to intelligence: people will be pushed to the “periphery,” responsible for confronting reality, intuition, and ethics, while AI will handle coordination, alignment, and proactive decision-making.
The article proposes using AI to build two key world models to replace middle management:
Company world model: Based on various decision records, code, documents, and more generated by remote work, enabling AI to continuously understand the company’s internal operations status.
Customer world model: Based on real transaction data generated by Cash App, Square, and others (Block believes money is the most honest signal), forming a deep understanding of customers’ real economic conditions.
