The Korean court will deliver the first-instance verdict today on former President Yoon Suk-yeol's alleged treason charge.

The Korean court will hold a first-instance trial today (February 19th) afternoon to hear charges of insurrection against former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol. On the 13th of this month, the special prosecutor team responsible for investigating the emergency martial law incident requested the court to sentence Yoon Suk-yeol to death on charges of leading an insurrection. According to South Korean law, those involved in insurrection can be sentenced to death or life imprisonment. The prosecution stated that although South Korea is considered a country that has “effectively abolished the death penalty” internationally, the death penalty can still be used for sentencing and judgment.
