OpenAI has announced a new initiative. It involves utilizing an AI age prediction model to automatically identify users under 18 and implement appropriate content filtering. According to Odaily’s report, this system is already in the full deployment stage.
Not just birthdate—AI technology that determines age based on behavioral patterns
Traditional age verification heavily relied on the birthdate information provided during registration. However, the new AI age prediction system introduced by OpenAI offers more advanced features. This model comprehensively analyzes multiple behavioral signals, such as the duration since account creation, login times, content access patterns, and input tendencies. By combining these data points, the system can determine age groups more precisely without solely relying on registration information.
Content restrictions for minors—strict measures against violence and sexual content
After age determination, accounts identified as minors are automatically subjected to strict content restrictions. Specifically, access to violent expressions and sexually sensitive content is limited. On the other hand, if an adult user is mistakenly classified as a minor, there are remedial measures. Through an external authentication platform called Persona, users can upload a selfie and an ID to re-verify their age and restore access rights.
New features for parents—enhanced parental controls for peace of mind
Another major feature included in this update is the expansion of parental control functions. Guardians can now set “silent hours” during which children cannot use ChatGPT. Additionally, if the AI detects serious emotional distress or concerns from the child’s interactions, it automatically notifies the guardian. This feature aims to make digital well-being between parents and children more achievable.
Currently available for consumer plans—expansion to the EU region planned
These AI-based age prediction and parental control features are currently available on ChatGPT’s consumer plan. OpenAI has also announced plans to expand these features to the EU region within the next few weeks. While addressing regional regulatory requirements, they aim to accelerate the global rollout.
This AI-powered age verification system will serve as an approach to enhance platform safety while balancing parental supervision rights.
