Daejeon Data Center Fire Causes Large-Scale Government System Outage... The Need for Distributed Storage Emerges

The data center of the National Information Resources Service(NIRS) experienced a lithium battery explosion, causing serious damage to government operational systems. As a result of the explosion, 647 government systems were shut down, leading to significant disruptions across administrative functions.

Scale and Damage of the Data Center Fire

This fire incident resulted in the complete loss of work records accumulated over seven years by approximately 750,000 public officials. In particular, 858TB of data stored in the G-Drive system was completely destroyed, due to the lack of external or offline backup systems. As of October 1st, recovery efforts are underway, but only 15.6% of the systems have been restored so far.

Risks of Centralized Storage Exposure

President Lee Jae-myung pointed out the issues of centralized data storage through this incident. It demonstrated how dangerous it is to concentrate all information in one place. The government emphasized the importance of adopting distributed solutions and establishing multi-backup systems to prevent such disasters.

This data center fire incident indicates that beyond a simple technical disaster, fundamental improvements in information security systems are necessary.
