Early Funding History of Bitcoin Core Developers: How the Bitcoin Foundation Crisis of 2015 Was Overcome

【Crypto World】The early funding sources for Bitcoin core developers have always been a topic of interest within the crypto community. Recently released documents reveal an interesting history — a charitable donation totaling $850,000, part of which indirectly flowed into digital currency initiatives. This funding played a role during the difficulties faced by the Bitcoin Foundation in 2015, providing support to Bitcoin Core developers such as Gavin Andresen and Wladimir van der Laan.

The documents detail the high-level interactions within the early crypto community. Brock Pierce, an early Bitcoin investor and co-founder of Tether, had discussions with relevant figures about the prospects of digital assets. Interestingly, although financial industry professionals at the time had concerns about reputation, they were optimistic about Bitcoin’s long-term potential. Between 2017 and 2018, industry insiders also discussed cryptocurrency tax treatment and related policy issues, purchasing numerous blockchain-themed books.

These details reflect the level of engagement of the elite network before Bitcoin transitioned from fringe technology to mainstream acceptance. While there is currently no evidence that these early contacts directly influenced Bitcoin’s technical development, they do illustrate the complexity of funding and networking structures within the cryptocurrency ecosystem.

Investing 850,000 USD just to support a few developers, who can make sense of this... However, it is quite understandable; someone has to spend money to maintain the ecosystem.

850,000 USD, is this the funding that supported the core developers back then? It feels more shabby than the financing of some projects nowadays, haha.

$850,000,000? Come on, I’ve already forgotten about that mess with the Bitcoin Foundation back then. Only now do I realize it when I see this document.

850,000 USD to support core developers? How is this calculation made? It really felt like there was a severe lack of funds back then.

850,000 USD can support core developers. Thinking back, the BTC community back then was really like small-town youth... What are those people at the foundation relying on to survive now?

Putting in 850,000 USD can keep a group of developers grinding away. Thinking about it now, it's still incredible.

850,000 USD spent just to support a few developers? This needs to be calculated carefully. The foundation was truly desperate at that time.

The early funding landscape is so complex... The story behind the $850,000 is much deeper than what is publicly known, and it feels like there are many undisclosed details.
