Times have changed. Native encrypted stablecoins have matured, L2 solutions cut down payment costs, and AI Agents suddenly need real micro-payment capabilities. Therefore, this dormant protocol has been reactivated and evolved into x402 — allowing anyone or AI to access paid content without registration, redirection, or manual intervention, automatically completing on-chain payment.

What seems like a simple auto-payment scheme behind it actually builds a whole ecosystem. Protocol standards, infrastructure, upper-layer applications — each layer is being filled in. This could potentially redefine the logic of internet payments.

Protocol Layer: Equipping AI Agents with a Payment Brain

x402 is not a single standard but a set of modular solutions. It aims to solve three real-world problems: how AI communicates with each other, how they pay, and how to establish trust.

The core x402 protocol is based on HTTP 402 status code, enabling AI to automatically receive payment requests when accessing paid content or APIs, then use stablecoins like USDC to complete on-chain transfers. The entire process involves no registration, no page redirects, and no manual intervention.

For AI collaboration, Google proposed the A2A (Agent-to-Agent) protocol to standardize inter-agent communication. Anthropic’s MCP protocol provides tools and data interfaces for AI integration. Based on MCP, Google released the AP2 payment protocol, allowing AI Agents to invoke services on demand and pay automatically, while also supporting traditional payment methods.

These protocols are made feasible largely through Ethereum’s EIP-3009 extension, which allows users to authorize token transfers via signatures without paying Gas. This solves the awkwardness of AI wallets lacking ETH. Additionally, the ongoing ERC-8004 standard aims to establish on-chain identities and reputation systems for AI Agents, recording execution history and trust scores, so service providers can assess agent reliability.

In summary: the x402 protocol layer is building a complete “language + currency + trust” system. AI can transact, collaborate, and pay without human involvement — a foundation for the entire ecosystem’s operation.

Infrastructure Layer: Making Payment Requests Truly Operational

Protocols define the blueprint; infrastructure turns it into reality. This layer handles request validation, payment execution, and service coordination — acting as a bridge between AI and the on-chain world.

Cloudflare plays a key role here. As a global CDN platform, it has initiated the x402 Foundation with industry partners, integrating the protocol into its nodes and developer tools. Cloudflare offers a worldwide distribution network and supports “resource-first, pay-later” deferred payment mechanisms, enabling AI Agents to smoothly access content and settle payments.

Next, x402 Facilitator projects are a set of payment aggregators. They handle the entire on-chain process for AI proxies: executing payments, bundling transactions, and broadcasting to the chain. When a user or AI sends an HTTP 402 request, the Facilitator pays Gas on behalf, packages the transaction, and broadcasts it. Settlement uses EIP-3009, allowing one-time authorization for USDC deductions — AI wallets don’t need to hold tokens or sign manually.

Data shows Coinbase processed over 1.35 million transactions through its Facilitator, covering 80,000 buyers — the largest one. PayAI is active on Solana and Base, with a total transaction volume of $280,000, and user numbers exceeding Coinbase. Others like X402rs, Thirdweb, and Open X402 are also competing for market share.

Besides Facilitators, dedicated on-chain settlement chains have emerged for x402. Kite AI is a notable example — the first Layer 1 blockchain fully embedding x402 payment primitives, supported by multiple institutions. It doesn’t handle payment verification but provides execution and settlement environments for x402 transactions, enabling agents to automatically initiate, receive, and reconcile on-chain payments via standardized commands.

In DePIN (Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks), Peaq also plays a crucial role. As a native public chain focused on machine economy, it supports x402 natively, enabling devices and agents to automatically settle payments among themselves.

Questflow exemplifies the x402 collaboration layer: developers can publish proxy tasks, set prices, and complete on-chain settlement directly through x402. AurraCloud and Meridian offer multi-chain settlement and custody services.

The infrastructure layer revolves around three core questions: How are requests sent out? How is secure receipt of payments ensured? How can deployment across different chains be accelerated? These determine whether the entire payment system can truly take off.

Application Layer: Who Is Actually Using x402

Once the protocol and infrastructure are in place, the real test is application adoption. Currently, the scene is sparse — most projects are still in early stages.

Daydreams is building an LLM inference platform powered by x402 payments. Heurist Deep Research is a Web3-native AI research tool, allowing users to pay with USDC per query to automatically generate multi-page research reports. Gloria AI enables pay-per-article news via x402. Snack Money API provides micro-payment and tipping interfaces for platforms like X and Farcaster. tip.md allows AI assistants to send crypto tips directly within chat interfaces, completing the USDC transfer via MCP + x402. Firecrawl is a web scraping API converting websites into data usable by LLMs, with payments made per call through x402.

Overall, application-layer products are still exploring, with functional platforms just emerging and not yet reaching scale. The key is who can create truly usable, pay-enabled, and reusable products first.

Meme Frenzy and Market Volatility

As x402 gains popularity, a wave of “riding the narrative” Meme projects has appeared. PING surpassed $10 million market cap on its first day on Base. Communities have also introduced PENG and x402-themed tokens. These Meme coins aren’t core to the protocol but help draw attention and provide early liquidity.

Challenges to Mainstream Adoption

Although the concept is eye-catching, large-scale deployment remains distant.

First: lack of usable products. Most projects are still in testnets or proof-of-concept stages, with rough user experiences.

Second: overly complex tech stack. x402 involves new protocols, payments, signature transfers, and proxy communication — raising development barriers.

Third: regulatory concerns. “Accountless, redirectionless payments” are efficient but bypass traditional KYC/AML requirements, posing regulatory risks in some jurisdictions.

Fourth: missing network effects. Payment protocols rely on ecosystem collaboration, but few services or platforms have integrated x402, so a self-sustaining cycle has yet to form.

From tech to real-world deployment, multiple hurdles remain for x402 to truly take off.

Long-term Participation Logic

From an investor perspective, the real opportunities lie in infrastructure and key platforms.

Foundational chains and infrastructure are critical. x402 relies on Ethereum standards like EIP-3009 and ERC-8004. Base is currently the main landing chain — with strong stablecoin loop support and developer friendliness — likely to incubate leading products first. Solana also has advantages in high-frequency payments, suitable for micro-transactions by Agents.

Native settlement chain Kite AI is worth watching. Along with payment aggregators and service platforms like PayAI, Meridian, and AurraCloud, which handle payment verification, Gas fees, and API integrations. Once a universal gateway forms, its value will rapidly increase.

Token side must be approached cautiously. x402-related tokens are small and volatile; many Meme tokens are still driven by narratives. Projects with real payment or platform utility are more worth paying attention to.

Industry Opinions and Perspectives

Top builders and KOLs’ views on x402 are also worth noting.

Some point out that the current hype around x402 is mostly driven by Meme speculation; the core “main course” — technological implementation and ecosystem formation — is still far from starting. Only through market filtering will quality projects emerge. Viewing x402 as a short-term hype is a misjudgment of the entire track.

Historically, micro-payments are not a new concept. Bitcoin, Lightning, Nano, IOTA, BSV have all attempted to push small transactions, but large-scale adoption has been elusive. What makes x402 different is it targets a real need: AI Agents — not human users.

On a higher level, x402 is the foundational payment infrastructure for the “machine economy.” On-chain knowledge collaboration, API economy, AI-driven DAO governance — all M2M (machine-to-machine) transactions inherently require frictionless, accountless, automatically executable payment layers.

Facilitator, as the key link for payment validation and execution, is becoming the most critical infrastructure in this space. Platforms like PayAI, Coinbase, Pieverse are already forming distinct competitive patterns.

A long-term concern is whether Agents can truly “hold tokens and pay” — involving key mechanisms like private key custody and permission management.

In summary: x402’s popularity may fluctuate in the short term, but from a long-term perspective, it is just entering the real construction phase.
