Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon reiterates his commitment to accelerate the construction of Ansan Tech Valley. With the designation of an Economic Free Zone entering the horizon, the industrial landscape of the region is expected to undergo significant changes.
During a site inspection in Ansan on December 11, Governor Kim stated that the Ansan Tech Valley construction plan will be smoothly promoted and that project schedules will be advanced as much as possible. He also added that he will actively support enterprise settlement at the provincial level and work to establish a solid ecosystem foundation. These remarks were made during a meeting with companies residing at the Ansan Kakao Data Center.
Ansan Tech Valley is located in the Sudeung area of Sangnok District, Ansan City, Gyeonggi Province, covering an area of 1.66 square kilometers. Centered around Hanyang University ERICA Campus and Gyeonggi Techno Valley, it has gathered approximately 200 small and medium-sized enterprises and venture companies. Currently, over 4,600 researchers are working there, forming a cluster that integrates industry, academia, and research.
Gyeonggi Province plans to invest a total of 4.105 trillion Korean won into the park by 2032 to develop it into a global R&D hub and a core base for cutting-edge robotics and manufacturing industries. Governor Kim emphasized a development strategy centered on the ecosystem, stating that they will go beyond simple enterprise support to promote the construction of an industrial ecosystem covering production and marketing.
In particular, Gyeonggi Province believes that there is a high likelihood that the government will officially designate Ansan Tech Valley as an Economic Free Zone by the end of this month. If designated, regulations in the Seoul metropolitan area will be relaxed, making it easier to attract top global companies. The provincial government predicts this move could generate approximately 2.2 trillion Korean won in production inducement effects and create about 12,000 jobs.
Governor Kim also announced that he will accelerate the progress of another highly anticipated regional project—the underground development of the Ansan Line. This project involves undergrounding approximately 5.12 kilometers of railway from Nambu Station to Jungang Station, with a total project cost of 1.7311 trillion Korean won. This segment has been operating on the surface since 1994 and is expected to be fully underground by 2034.
These developments are expected to serve as opportunities to simultaneously reorganize the industrial and urban infrastructure of the Ansan region. Especially if the designation as an Economic Free Zone is achieved, Ansan Tech Valley is highly likely to emerge as a hub for cutting-edge industries in the Seoul metropolitan area. Coupled with improvements in transportation and residential conditions, the effects of attracting investment and business settlement are also expected to double.
