Iran announced it’s preparing to exit the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), a foundational global agreement meant to stop the spread of nuclear weapons.

The NPT, in force since 1970, commits non-nuclear states to never acquire nuclear weapons and allows peaceful nuclear energy use under strict IAEA oversight.
