On the 6th local time, an explosion and leak occurred at the Camisea natural gas pipeline in the Cusco region of Peru, causing traffic paralysis in major cities including Lima and a sharp rise in fuel prices. This incident quickly escalated into an energy crisis sweeping across Peru. Arencastre, acting chairman of the Peruvian Energy and Mining Investment Supervisory Agency, stated that currently over 350,000 taxi drivers and many small vehicles and tricycles are unable to access natural gas supplies. The Peruvian government has decided to suspend in-person classes at all primary, secondary, and higher education institutions in Lima and Cayaeo regions starting March 9, switching entirely to remote learning; public sector employees are required to work from home.
