Trump: I Don't Need International Law, My Power Is Only Bound by My Own Morality
On January 9, according to Lianhe Zaobao, U.S. President Trump declared that his "own moral standards" are the only constraints on his orders to take military action worldwide. Just days before making this statement, Trump launched a lightning strike that overthrew Venezuelan President Maduro and threatened to take action against many other countries, including Greenland. On Wednesday (January 7), during an interview with The New York Times, Trump was asked whether his global authority has limitations. In response, he said, "Yes, just one. That is my own moral standards, my own ideas. That’s the only thing that can constrain me." He also stated, "I don't need international law, I have no intention of harming others." The Republican president then added, "I do indeed" need to comply with international law, but "it depends on what you define as international law." Agence France-Presse reported that the United States is not a member of the International Criminal Court (ICC), which tries war criminals, and has repeatedly refused to accept rulings from the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
