Meta is fully shifting to closed-source models. The new model Avocado is expected to be released next spring.
Deep Tide TechFlow News: On December 10th, after investing hundreds of billions of dollars over several months to build the most expensive team in tech history, Meta CEO Zuckerberg is now deeply involved in daily R&D and pushing the company’s strategy toward directly monetizable AI models. According to insiders, a new model codenamed “Avocado” is expected to be released in spring 2026, possibly in a closed-source format (strictly controlled and sold externally by Meta). This move marks a significant deviation from Meta’s long-standing advocacy for open-source initiatives. Zuckerberg is dedicating substantial time to a core team called TBD Lab, which, during the training of Avocado, has integrated third-party models including Google Gemma, OpenAI GPT-OSS, and Alibaba Qwen. Meanwhile, Meta is drastically adjusting resource allocation, cutting back on metaverse and virtual reality investments, redirecting funds toward AI glasses and other hardware, and planning to invest $600 billion in AI infrastructure in the United States over the next three years.
