Ethereum core developer internal letter leaked! The three major contradictions of the foundation sparked discussions among Polygon, AC, Vitalik, and others.
Starting with the three major contradictions Peter Szilágyi has regarding his position in the foundation, Polygon CEO Sandeep Nailwal expressed that after reading Peter Szilágyi's internal letter, he also began to question his loyalty to Ethereum. Subsequently, Vitalik Buterin posted to affirm Polygon's contributions to Ethereum; however, Andre Cronje detailed the Ethereum Foundation's indifference towards his project from the perspective of a non-core developer and a non-star Layer 2.
Ethereum core developers point out their three major contradictions in the foundation.
Peter Szilágyi stated that he feels a serious disconnect between his role and perception within the foundation and ecosystem. He pointed out that the foundation often places him in a leadership role externally, but in actual decision-making and internal processes, he feels very passive, merely regarded as a leader.
He emphasized in the letter that he has always believed Ethereum is a good thing that brings change to the world, and he sees the foundation as an important force in promoting this change. The following is not a prophecy of Ethereum's demise, but rather his personal reasons for feeling that Ethereum has already failed. The three major issues he feels conflicted about within the Ethereum Foundation are:
Role recognition and actual power imbalance: He believes he is viewed as a leadership role in public forums and foundation promotions, but in actual internal decision-making and strategy implementation, his team and he lack the corresponding authority or support.
Failure of reward and incentive mechanisms: He disclosed that during the first 6 years of his tenure at the foundation, his salary was only about 625,000 USD, while during this period, the market value of ETH rose from zero to about 450 billion USD. He believes that working for the foundation was a financially disadvantageous decision. This situation can induce conflicts of interest, reduce the motivation for developers who genuinely care about the protocol to stay, and create conditions for the protocol to be captured (.
Concentration of power and unequal opportunities in the ecosystem: He pointed out that, although Ethereum advocates for decentralization and open participation, in reality, most successful projects are supported by the same group of people, backed by the same 1-3 venture capital firms. He candidly stated, “The direction of Ethereum often depends on your relationship with Vitalik Buterin.” He believes that this power structure and way of distributing opportunities is contrary to the equal opportunity and open ecosystem he initially believed in.
Polygon CEO questions whether he should continue to be loyal to Ethereum.
Polygon co-founder and CEO Sandeep Nailwal candidly expressed that he is starting to question his loyalty to Ethereum. He entered the cryptocurrency space not because of Bitcoin, but because of Ethereum. He is also grateful to Ethereum. He admires Vitalik Buterin and sees him as a model for the conceptual framework of this world.
He said, “Although I/we have never received any direct support from the Ethereum Foundation or the Ethereum community, I have always held an ethical loyalty to Ethereum, even if this may result in Polygon losing billions in valuation.” He candidly stated that the Ethereum community has been rotten for quite some time, and he questioned why every other week someone publicly questions Polygon's contributions to Ethereum?
He stated that Solana's core developer Ashwin Sekar was initially part of the Polygon camp, but he felt disgusted by the socialist behavior of the Ethereum community, which attacked projects like Polygon that made significant contributions simply due to some arbitrary technical definitions. As a result, Ashwin Sekar switched to Solana.
Sandeep Nailwal believes that the Ethereum community needs to seriously reflect on itself and ask why contributors to Ethereum, even major contributors like Peter Szilágyi, question and even regret their loyalty to Ethereum. The only defense now is that Ethereum is a democratic nation, and in any democratic nation, all parties will ultimately be dissatisfied. But in the long run, it is still the only truly effective system.
Vitalik definitely acknowledges Polygon's efforts in the L2 and ZK space.
Solana CEO Anatoly Yakovenko also left a comment under Sandeep Nailwal's post: “habibi ) Arabic: dear (” a casual remark with recruitment implications. Immediately, Vitalik Buterin acknowledged Polygon's contributions in the post, detailing their efforts in L2, ZK, and other tracks, as well as Sandeep Nailwal's significant contributions to biomedical infrastructure and research in India.
Who does the Ethereum Foundation allocate funds to? AC: ET has never supported us.
DeFi veteran Andre Cronje expressed his views on the Ethereum Foundation from a perspective different from core developer )Peter Szilágyi( and star Layer 2 )Polygon(.
He quoted a post from Polygon saying: “I'm confused, so who exactly is the Ethereum Foundation supporting? While building on ETH, I have already spent over 700 ETH deploying and on ETH infrastructure. I tried to reach out to the EF, but never got a reply, no BD, no grants, no support at all, not even a tweet.”
