EU Lawmakers Back Digital Euro Proposal in Key Parliamentary Vote - Crypto Economy
TL;DR
In a crucial vote, the European Parliament threw its weight behind the digital euro proposal, positioning the currency as a vital tool for the region’s monetary sovereignty. With this backing, the EU aims to modernize its retail payment system and protect the integrity of the single market.
During the session, MEPs highlighted that public money in digital form is essential to mitigate risks in a context of rising global geopolitical tensions. Thus, the project moves forward as a shield against the influence of foreign private instruments.
Furthermore, they emphasized the importance of the European Central Bank (ECB) operating without external political pressure. This autonomy is considered the basic pillar for maintaining market confidence and ensuring long-term financial stability.

A Public Good Against Payment Fragmentation
The approved resolution clarifies that even if the digital euro proposal is passed, tangible money will maintain its legal tender status. Both formats will coexist to ensure financial inclusion and offer diverse payment options to European citizens.
For their part, experts and economists urged that public interest be prioritized to prevent private stablecoins from controlling the digital ecosystem. The goal is to establish a payment system under European control that operates with its own efficient infrastructure.
From now on, the project enters a phase of advanced technical readiness under the supervision of the Eurosystem. If the legislative deadlines set for 2026 are met, pilot tests could officially begin during 2027.
In summary, according to the roadmap, the first official issuance of the digital euro could occur around 2029. With this initiative, the EU reaffirms its commitment to leading digital financial innovation without compromising the security of its users.
