  • Registering gets you money, finishing earns you the most
  • Jiangsu is not the first time, but this time the amount is the highest
  • Marathon economy: one race drives 13 times indirect consumption

According to China’s “The Paper” news, the Nanjing Xianlin Half Marathon officially started on April 12, attracting 12k runners to register, with an overall finish rate of 98.97%.

But what has sparked more public discussion is the housing subsidy policy simultaneously introduced by Qixia District in Nanjing: Finish the race to receive a 100k RMB housing subsidy, sparking heated debate in Taiwanese communities: China has so many houses, they can do this kind of thing?

Register and get money, finishing earns you the most

According to official information from “Nanjing Qixia Release,” the housing subsidy for this race is divided into three levels: registered runners can receive a 20k RMB subsidy; successful participants can get up to 60k RMB; and those who complete the full race can receive a 100k RMB housing discount.

The subsidy conditions are: valid until May 31, 2026, applicable to 14 designated housing projects, with properties ranging from 89 to 400 square meters. Each participant is limited to purchasing one unit, and the subsidy is directly deducted from the purchase price, not usable toward the down payment.

In the past, common real estate promotional tactics included lowering down payment ratios, giving renovation gift packs, and distributing shopping vouchers, but we have never seen a “running for housing subsidy” campaign. This creative marketing approach indeed generates more buzz.

Jiangsu is not the first time, but this time the amount is the highest

In fact, “marathon running to get a housing subsidy” is not an original idea from Qixia, Nanjing. According to reports from Chinese media, at least six cities have launched similar policies, including Wuxi and Yancheng in Jiangsu, as well as Shaanxi Xixian New Area, Shiyan and Jingzhou in Hubei.

For example, in March this year, Wuxi Marathon attracted runners with a maximum 80k RMB housing subsidy, offering a 50k RMB discount just for successful registration. This time, Nanjing Qixia surpassed Wuxi with a 100k RMB offer, making it the largest and highest-value marathon housing subsidy scheme nationwide.

Marathon economy: one race drives 13 times indirect consumption

Additionally, data analysis shows that the economic impact of Chinese marathons is quite significant. Studies indicate that the ratio of indirect consumption by out-of-town participants in food, accommodation, transportation, entertainment, shopping, and leisure reaches as high as 1:13.

The Chinese Athletic Association released the “2025 China Marathon Blue Paper” on April 4, showing that in 2025, there will be 594 marathons nationwide, with a total participation of 4.54 million people; 284 A-class events will directly generate economic benefits of 18.51 billion RMB, a 16.8% increase year-on-year; the overall driving effect is even higher, reaching 45.4 billion RMB, and creating 183k jobs.

Innovative models attract attention, but effectiveness remains to be verified

Of course, the “marathon running to get a housing subsidy” strategy is essentially a short-term traffic-driving tactic during the real estate market adjustment period. Its actual conversion rate remains to be seen over time. However, it is undeniable that such innovative attempts open new avenues of thinking.
