Trump’s Economic Adviser: Government Shutdown to End This Week if Democrats ‘Back Down’

Tensions rise in Washington. The U.S. government shutdown has entered its third week, but according to Kevin Hassett, Donald Trump’s chief economic adviser, the deadlock could finally break.

In an interview with CNBC, Hassett said the White House expects “a quick resolution this week” — if Democrats stop blocking negotiations.

Deadlock over healthcare funding Speaking on Squawk Box, Hassett explained that the main sticking point is healthcare funding.

Republicans want to pass a short-term spending bill to keep the government running at current levels. Democrats refuse to agree unless the bill includes extensions of Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies and tax credits that are set to expire at year’s end. “That’s the wedge that’s blocking Congress,” Hassett said.

He accused Democrats of deliberately stalling talks to maintain political leverage ahead of nationwide “No Kings” protests planned for the weekend against Trump.

“Schumer’s Shutdown” — White House blames Democrats Hassett directly blamed Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats for “intentionally keeping the government closed.”

“Moderate Democrats will eventually have to move forward,” he said, “and once the government reopens, we can negotiate policy the normal way.” Republican John Thune even offered Democrats a compromise — a vote on extending Obamacare subsidies in exchange for immediately reopening the government. The offer was rejected.

Hassett called it “Schumer’s shutdown”, saying Democrats are the ones holding back the country and harming ordinary Americans.

White House prepares backup plan, threatens stronger measures According to Hassett, Trump’s team is already preparing a Plan B — a set of steps to force Senate action if the stalemate continues.

“If this isn’t resolved this week,” Hassett warned, “the White House will take tougher measures to bring Democrats back to the table.” He added that Trump remains “very engaged” behind the scenes but believes the Senate must now take responsibility for resolving the issue.

House on hold as new congresswoman awaits swearing-in The shutdown has also frozen the House of Representatives.

Speaker Mike Johnson continues to delay the swearing-in of newly elected congresswoman Adelita Grijalva until the government reopens.

Grijalva, who won her election in late September, was supposed to take the oath last week. Johnson said she’ll be sworn in “on the first day the House resumes session.” Democrats accuse Johnson of political obstruction, especially since Grijalva supports a petition to release the Justice Department’s full Jeffrey Epstein files, a topic Republicans have avoided addressing.

“Things will move this week,” Hassett insists Despite Washington’s chaos, Trump’s adviser remains optimistic: “There’s a real chance things will come together this week.” Hassett stressed that the White House no longer plans to sit idly by — if the Senate fails to act, stronger measures will follow.

At stake is not only the government’s funding but also the political credibility of Republicans ahead of key economic decisions.
