Trump’s 100% Tariff Could Devastate British Cinema: Hollywood May Cut London Off from Its Funding

Hollywood vs. the world. Donald Trump has once again shaken global markets — this time not with steel or cars, but with films. His proposal to impose a 100% tariff on all non-American movies directly targets the heart of global filmmaking — and threatens to cripple the British film industry, which heavily relies on U.S. money to stay alive.

Britain’s film industry runs on U.S. funding — and that may soon change The UK film sector has only just begun to recover from the pandemic. Streaming platforms have eroded cinema audiences, box office revenues remain below pre-COVID levels, and Hollywood labor strikes have slowed production worldwide.

Now comes Trump’s tariff threat — a blow that could cut off Britain’s main source of financing. According to data from the British Film Institute (BFI), 65% of UK film funding comes from the United States, primarily from major studios and streaming giants.

Without those funds, large portions of the industry could grind to a halt. Director Howard Berry warned: “British filmmaking depends on American investment. If that money disappears, many productions simply won’t happen.”

From Pinewood to Netflix — a threat across the industry Iconic studios like Pinewood and Shepperton, home to James Bond and Star Wars, would be among the hardest hit. These studios rely heavily on U.S. productions that employ British crews, locations, and technology. Filmmaker Gurinder Chadha, director of Blinded by the Light, put it bluntly: “It’s a miracle I managed to finish my new film. If these tariffs go through, many others won’t be so lucky.” Trump insists his plan is about “protecting American film,” but critics call it protectionism that could trigger a global cultural shockwave.

Global cinema can’t be divided by borders Modern filmmaking is an international collaboration — a script written in New York, filmed in London, scored in Berlin, and edited in Seoul.

Trump’s proposed tariffs would shatter that ecosystem. Tim Richards, CEO of Vue Cinemas, asked: “How do you even define a ‘non-American’ film today? Every major production is a multinational effort.”

New directions: Europe, Asia, and creative resilience Some British producers are already exploring new partnerships.

Zygi Kamasa of True Brit Entertainment believes the crisis could open new doors: “Our films sell very well internationally. Maybe it’s time to focus more on co-productions with Europe and Asia.” According to MP Caroline Dinenage, the stakes couldn’t be higher: “The creative industries contribute over £126 billion annually to the UK economy. The Prime Minister must bring this issue directly to Washington.”

British cinema stands at a crossroads Trump’s tariffs could redraw the global film map.

If enacted, Hollywood may stay home — and Britain could lose most of its film funding. Whether British filmmakers survive will depend on how fast they can build new alliances.

But one thing is clear — if the 100% tariff becomes reality, the lights may soon go out on British sets.
