Israel confiscates 1.5 billion dollars worth of Tether allegedly linked to Iran.
The Israeli Ministry of Defense just issued an order to seize 187 cryptocurrency wallets allegedly linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran (IRGC). According to the National Counter Terrorism Financing Bureau (NBCTF), these wallets once processed 1.5 billion USD in Tether but now only hold about 1.5 million USD. The seizure order is based on the 2016 Anti-Terrorism Law, asserting that the funds belong to the IRGC or are used for terrorist activities.
Blockchain analysis company Elliptic confirmed that the wallets received funds, but not all are directly controlled by the IRGC. On September 13, Tether blacklisted 39 wallets to block transactions, continuing its policy of cooperation with law enforcement agencies.
This is the latest move in a series of international measures aimed at preventing the IRGC from exploiting crypto to evade sanctions. Analysts warn that cryptocurrencies, despite their transparency, can still be exploited as financial tools for sanctioned countries.
