(MENAFN) Israel’s recent attack on Iran’s South Pars gas field, followed by Tehran’s retaliatory strikes on vital energy infrastructure in several Gulf nations, marks a significant escalation in the ongoing Middle East conflict. What began as targeted military strikes and base-to-base missile exchanges has expanded into assaults on energy facilities, raising fears of a global energy crisis with long-lasting consequences.

Although South Pars contains the world’s largest natural gas reserves, Iran’s ability to export gas is constrained by international sanctions. As a result, damage to the field and its supporting facilities primarily affects the domestic market. Most gas from South Pars is used within Iran, with only limited exports going to Iraq and Türkiye.

Israel targeted the South Pars field and the nearby Asaluyeh processing hub on March 18. In response, Iran carried out strikes on Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and notably Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City, which is the world’s largest LNG export center.
