Strong convection in Guangdong has caused some high-speed rail flights to be delayed. Heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusts up to level 12 may occur locally today and tomorrow.
Yesterday (March 29), severe convective weather hit multiple areas across Guangdong, causing some high-speed trains to be temporarily suspended and leading to the cancellation of several flights. Today and tomorrow, Guangdong will still experience heavy downpours and severe convective weather; in some areas there will be thunderstorm gales of levels 8 to 10, as well as hail, with local occurrences of extremely heavy rainfall and gusts reaching around level 12. People need to take relevant preventive measures. On the day after tomorrow, rainfall in Guangdong will weaken significantly.
△ On the 29th, due to thunderstorm gales, trees were broken in Nanhai District of Foshan.
Yesterday, severe convective weather struck many parts of Guangdong. From 15:00 to 16:00, Guangzhou recorded hourly rainfall exceeding 50 millimeters; in northern Maoming, northern Yangjiang, the north-central part of the Pearl River Delta, Shaoguan, and Qingyuan, there were gales of levels 8 to 10, with localized gusts of level 12. The strong winds caused foreign objects to hang on high-speed rail catenary systems, leading to the suspension of the Guangzhou South to Foshan West section of the Nanning–Guangzhou High-Speed Railway and the Guiyang–Guangzhou High-Speed Railway. At Baiyun Airport, multiple flights were diverted for landing due to thunderstorms or canceled.
The Guangdong Provincial Meteorological Service expects that today and tomorrow Guangdong will still see clearly severe convective weather. From west to east, there will be strong precipitation and severe convective conditions such as thunderstorm gales of levels 8 to 10 and hail. In some places, gusts of around level 12 or tornadoes may occur. In Maoming, Yunfu, northern Guangdong, and cities and counties in the Pearl River Delta, there will be heavy rain to torrential rain, with local extremely heavy rainfall. In other cities and counties, there will be thunderstorms with moderate rain, with local heavy rain.
△ Forecasts for cities across Guangdong.
On the day after tomorrow, rainfall in Guangdong will weaken significantly. It is expected that in counties and cities in the northern part of Guangdong (slightly north), it will transition from cloudy to scattered light rain; in the rest, it will be cloudy with some clouds at times, with light rain and local moderate rain.
Meteorological authorities remind that Guangdong has entered a period with frequent severe convective and heavy precipitation. Today and tomorrow, strong convective weather will still occur. The public should pay attention to real-time warning information nearby, avoid going out during periods of severe convective weather and heavy rainfall as much as possible, and do a good job of defense against lightning, hail, strong winds, and other hazards. Prepare for secondary disasters caused by localized heavy precipitation, such as waterlogging in urban and rural areas, flash floods, and landslides.
