On the afternoon of March 29, at the 2026 Zhongguancun Forum major achievements release conference, 21 major achievements—including the successful completion of the High-Energy Synchrotron Radiation Source for trial operation—were showcased in a concentrated manner, along with multiple major flagship policies and reports and several major signing projects. This delivered a high-quality development “report card” and demonstrated the vigorous momentum behind Beijing’s science and technology innovation leadership driving the development of new quality productive forces.

Major achievements include multiple efforts aimed at the world’s science and technology frontiers

Among the 21 major achievements released in this conference, they cover four major areas: toward the world’s scientific and technological frontiers, toward the main battlefield of the economy, toward major national needs, and toward the people’s life and health. Of these, there are 5 achievements aimed at the world’s scientific and technological frontiers: the high-energy synchrotron radiation source completed and entered trial operation; the world’s highest magnetic field all-superconducting user magnet; the first realization of a two-dimensional metal; a two-dimensional semiconductor wafer with performance surpassing silicon-based counterparts; and the world’s first zeptometer (atto-meter) level spectroscopic imaging chip “Yuheng.”

For the main battlefield of the economy, 7 achievements were released, namely: an open-source intelligent computing software system for diverse AI chips—Zhongzhi FlagOS2.0; the first ultra-wideband optoelectronic fusion chip for wireless communication across the entire 6G frequency spectrum; a reconfigurable intelligent computing supernode enabling the domestic AI ecosystem; Tongzhi Brain: leading the next generation of general-purpose robots; eco-friendly biopolymer materials PHA built into a 10,000-ton level production line synthesized using “special bacteria”; a green polypeptide drug for treating citrus huanglongbing; and real-time interactive world models.

There are 4 achievements aimed at major national needs: the 175MPa ultra-high-pressure wellhead and supporting equipment to help efficient development of deep-sea oil and gas; the AES00 advanced civilian aero turbo-shaft engine; a technology for solidifying and storing methane clathrate in deep-sea carbon dioxide; and a breakthrough discovery and breeding application targeting genes that resist parasitic weeds.

For the people’s life and health, there are 5 achievements: the first discovery of the core disease-causing functional circuit in Parkinson’s disease; the “Brain No. 1” completed the international first batch of human implantation of flexible high-throughput semi-invasive wireless fully implantable brain-machine system; precise manufacturing of sustained-release microsphere preparations with uniform particle size; a new path for precise drug delivery for brain diseases; and China’s first shoulder joint replacement surgical robot system.

According to relevant officials from the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission and the Zhongguancun Administration, the release of these achievements reflects the spirit of daring to explore scientific and technological frontiers and using original breakthroughs “from 0 to 1” to solidify the foundation of innovation; it demonstrates the cultivation of new quality productive forces, driven by integrated applications “from 1 to 100” to drive industrial transformation; it shows a sense of responsibility and commitment, adhering to the principle of using science and technology for good to improve human well-being; and it highlights proactive piloting and early implementation, with distinctive features of using institutional innovation to break through bottlenecks in the development of emerging industries.

Breakthrough progress in precise treatment for Parkinson’s disease draws attention

In this release, “the first discovery of the core disease-causing functional circuit in Parkinson’s disease,” which is aimed at the people’s life and health, has attracted attention from many patients. Liu Hesheng, Chief Scientist of the Department of Brain and Neurodegenerative Diseases at the Changping Laboratory, introduced that the research achievement announced in this release—the core disease-causing functional circuit in Parkinson’s disease—marks a systematic breakthrough in China’s work on parsing neurological mechanisms of brain diseases and precise neural regulation, achieving progress “from basic theory to key technologies to clinical applications.” The related equipment and therapies have already been scaled up and applied in more than 60 hospitals nationwide, with a cumulative number of treated patients exceeding 3,000 cases. The overall effective rate has surpassed 70%, truly realizing the leap from basic research to major clinical applications.

According to Liu Hesheng, Parkinson’s disease is the world’s second largest neurodegenerative disease, seriously affecting patients’ quality of life and also imposing a heavy burden on the social healthcare system. As of 2025, China’s Parkinson’s disease patients exceed 5 million. In recent years, non-invasive brain stimulation technology has gradually become a development trend due to its safety; however, because there is a lack of clear neural circuit mechanisms and precise intervention targets, the overall therapeutic effectiveness remains unstable. Therefore, the key to achieving precise and effective intervention lies in deeply elucidating the core neural circuit mechanism of Parkinson’s disease.

This team, for the first time internationally, uncovered the underlying disease-causing mechanism of Parkinson’s disease and confirmed that its essence is a specific network impairment of the body-cognition network. From the perspective of functional circuits, this discovery unifies the deep-layer mechanisms through which mainstream therapies such as drugs, brain pacemakers, magnetic wave knives, and transcranial magnetic stimulation achieve their effects: they all point to the normalization of the body-cognition network, establishing a brand-new direction for the development and efficacy evaluation of next-generation Parkinson’s disease new therapies. Large-scale clinical validation has shown that compared with conventional target-based therapies, the efficacy improvement of the new therapies exceeds twofold.

At present, this achievement has steadily realized an industrial closed-loop: the precision brain-circuit stimulation system independently developed by the team has been implemented in Beijing and has obtained registration certificates for 3 medical devices. The related equipment and therapies have already been scaled up and applied in more than 60 hospitals nationwide, with a cumulative number of treated patients exceeding 3,000 cases. This achievement not only provides a new direction for Parkinson’s disease treatment, but will also help transform brain disease diagnosis and treatment models from “experience-driven” to “mechanism-driven” and “precise intervention.”

Meanwhile, the High-Energy Synchrotron Radiation Source for trial operation has also drawn attention. Pan Weimin, General Commander of the High-Energy Synchrotron Radiation Source Project at the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that the HEPS project took nearly seven years, and it has finally been completed and put into trial operation. This marks the important milestone that Asia’s first fourth-generation synchrotron radiation source moves from the construction stage into preparations for open operation, and it is an important milestone for China to achieve a generation-spanning leap in synchrotron radiation light sources.

During the HEPS construction process, the team overcame multiple key technologies and achieved end-to-end independent innovation. This “super microscope,” based on the core principle of “accelerating electrons to produce light,” can provide high-quality X-rays and explore the microscopic world in depth. As of mid-February 2026, it has completed more than 200 experimental projects for 91 institutions and provided nearly 5,000 hours of user beam time, including multiple domestic universities such as Tsinghua and Peking University, domestic and international research institutions, and leading enterprises such as BYD and Contemporary Amperex Technology. In the future, this “brightest light from China” will illuminate more fields and unleash greater potential.

Policy releases including “Issuing guidance on the development and application of commercial auto insurance for intelligent connected new energy vehicles”

At the major achievements release event, the Ministry of Science and Technology released the “National Innovation Index Report 2025.” It constructs an indicator system from five aspects: innovation resources, knowledge creation, enterprise innovation, innovation performance, and innovation governance, and evaluates the innovation capabilities of 60 countries worldwide. The results show that China’s national innovation index ranks 9th globally in comprehensive terms, up 1 position from the previous year. Compared with 2012, China’s comprehensive ranking has improved by 11 places; it is the country with the fastest progress in the past decade and more, and the only upper-middle-income country that has entered the global top 10.

The Beijing Regulatory Bureau of the National Financial Regulatory Administration released “Starting the development and application of commercial insurance for intelligent connected new energy vehicles.” This application basically follows the existing commercial auto insurance system for new energy vehicles. It mainly provides risk protection for specific intelligent driving scenarios and soft/hardware loss concerns that consumers and auto companies care about, and it can be unified and adapted to intelligent connected new energy vehicles across all tiers of L2 to L4. For the L2-level assisted driving vehicles that most vehicle owners care about, in order to prudently conduct early pilot efforts, the initial dedicated products are mainly applicable to new vehicles; after vehicle owners purchase new vehicles in Beijing, they may choose to buy either dedicated products or existing auto insurance products on their own. Following the principle of “roll out a batch once matured, put a batch online,” the system upgrades and data interactions for auto companies and the insurance industry will be advanced as quickly as possible; the Beijing Automobile Insurance Industry Association will announce in batches the auto companies and specific vehicle models to which dedicated products apply. For L3 and L4 automated driving vehicles, dedicated products can be applied to all vehicles in the Beijing area that conduct tests according to law and regulations or have obtained formal road-use qualification, providing comprehensive risk protection for automated driving vehicles.

In addition, at the major achievements release event, a series of important achievements and cooperation agreement signings were also held, including the signing ceremony for the Beijing Natural Science Foundation joint fund; the cooperation project between the KemeiLe Group and Carls Medical Group; the Beijing XuanZhi Life Intelligent Research Institute project; the Micro-Hinpower “Tianqiao” series ultra-bionic dexterous hand project; the VSBC global research and development strategy center project; and others.
