According to The Paper (界面新闻): Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has recently broken with the longstanding tradition of “natural price drops” in game hardware over product cycles, and has officially announced an increase in the prices of its PlayStation 5 console lineup for the Chinese mainland market.

On the evening of March 27, Sony’s PlayStation China division stated that, due to ongoing pressure on the global economy, it will raise the suggested retail prices of the domestically released PS5 Slim and the PS5 Pro, with the new prices taking effect starting April 2. Among them, the PS5 Slim Digital Edition will be increased from 3,499 yuan to 3,999 yuan, a rise of 500 yuan; the PS5 console Slim (disc) will be raised from 4,299 yuan to 4,399 yuan, an increase of 100 yuan; and the PS5 Pro will go from 5,599 yuan to 6,299 yuan, up 700 yuan. This marks Sony’s second domestic PS5 lineup price adjustment since 2022, and it is also the first price change since the PS5 Pro was released.

This price increase is not limited to the China market. In the U.S. market, the PS5 disc edition rises from $549.99 to $649.99, the Digital Edition from $499.99 to $599.99, and the PS5 Pro is even increased significantly from $699.99 to $899.99, a $200 increase. Key markets such as Europe and Japan have also followed suit simultaneously. The PS5 range has generally seen price increases of around $100, and the PS Portal remote player is also priced higher.

In its announcement, Sony emphasized, “We fully understand that the price adjustment will affect user groups. After comprehensive and prudent assessment, this measure is a necessary choice to ensure that we deliver innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players around the world.”

After the above news was released, offline PS5 in-stock sales at Sony’s physical stores may see a short-term surge; however, in the long run, it could have a certain impact on sales in the entry-level market, effectively pushing players to shift to the secondhand market or digital subscription services. The Paper (界面新闻) found through a query of JD.com and Tmall that, in Sony’s official flagship stores, the relevant models are all sold out. Sony customer service said that there is currently no specific estimated restocking time.
