According to a Reuters report on April 1 citing sources, U.S. President Trump has instructed Vice President Vance to privately convey a message to Iran: as long as “specific demands,” such as reopening the Strait of Hormuz, are met, he is open to a ceasefire.

The report said that as of March 31, Vance was still talking with “intermediaries” about the Iran issue. Vance conveyed a “hardline” message, saying that Trump is “impatient.” He also warned that unless Iran reaches an agreement, Iran’s infrastructure will face increasing pressure from strikes.

Separately, citing a report by the U.S. news website Axios, it said, on the basis of comments from three U.S. officials, the U.S. is discussing with Iran the possibility of reaching a ceasefire agreement on the condition of reopening the Strait of Hormuz. The officials also said it is not yet clear whether an agreement can be reached.

Earlier that day, Trump said on social media that Iran “has just asked the United States for a ceasefire,” but that the U.S. would “consider” it only when the Strait of Hormuz is open. Later that day, he delivered a nationwide address on the Iran issue.
