A 7.4 magnitude earthquake occurs in waters near Indonesia

A 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck the northern Molucca Sea (Molucca Sea) in Indonesia. The U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center said that tsunamis may occur in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia.

The Hong Kong Observatory also recorded a 7.4-magnitude earthquake in the northern Molucca Sea at 6:48 this morning. The epicenter was located about 160 kilometers east of Wanja Lao, and the earthquake’s depth was 10 kilometers.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake occurred at 6:48 this morning Hong Kong time. It was initially reported as a 7.8-magnitude quake and was later revised to 7.4. The depth of the quake was 35 kilometers. The U.S. tsunami warning system said that after the earthquake, tsunami waves up to 0.3 to 1 meter above normal tide levels may occur in some coastal areas of Indonesia; tsunami waves may also occur in the coastal areas of Guam, Japan, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, and Taiwan, with heights less than 0.3 meter above normal tide levels.
