OpenAI shutting down Sora: Good news for Chinese applications? Kuaishou Keling and Vidu active user growth
Sora
Phoenix Network Technology reports from Beijing time on April 1, according to Bloomberg: A week after OpenAI announced it would shut down its AI video generator Sora, competitors including Kuaishou’s Kling AI and RunwayML have already begun to capture market share.
Data from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower shared with Bloomberg, based on iOS and Android, shows that Kuaishou’s Kling AI saw its week-over-week active users globally rise by 4%, averaging 2.6 million. In fact, before OpenAI announced the shutdown of Sora, Kling AI’s global monthly active users were already leading; in March, it averaged 7.8 million monthly active users, while Sora had 4.7 million.

Other AI video generation apps have also achieved growth. In the same week, the weekly active user counts for video large models Vidu from Beijing Shengshu Technology and RunwayML both increased by 1%. RunwayML is available for download only on Apple’s App Store, while Vidu is offered on both iOS and Android platforms. Another sign that investors have confidence in its technology is that both RunwayML and Shengshu Technology completed a new round of financing in February.
OpenAI’s decision to stop supporting Sora has opened the door for smaller competitors to vie for users and revenue. Currently, demand in this niche area from creatives, filmmakers, and marketers is surging. (Author/Xiao Yu)
