Trump once threatened that if Europe does not join the Strait of Hormuz alliance, he would cut off arms supplies to Ukraine.
BlockBeats message, April 2, according to the UK’s Financial Times. Insiders say that Trump has threatened to stop providing weapons to Ukraine unless Europe joins the Strait of Hormuz alliance. Last month, Trump asked NATO’s naval forces to help him reopen the strait, but European governments rejected the request.
Three officials familiar with the relevant discussions said that Trump responded by threatening to stop supplying materiel to the “Ukraine Priority Needs List” (PURL) project. As a result, urged by NATO Secretary General Rutte, several key member countries, including France, Germany, and the UK, issued a hastily agreed statement on March 19, saying: “We indicate that we are willing to make an appropriate contribution to ensuring safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.”
An official familiar with the relevant discussions said: “It was Rutte who insisted on publishing this joint statement, because Trump had threatened to withdraw from the ‘Transatlantic Partnership Alliance’ and to withdraw entirely from Ukraine-related matters.” (Jin10)
