Goldman Sachs: If oil supply disruptions continue, they may drag on this year’s earnings for the S&P 500
Goldman Sachs said that sustained high oil prices may become the biggest threat to this year’s earnings prospects for US stock companies, and warned that every 1 percentage point drop in US economic growth could lead to an earnings decline of up to 4% for S&P 500 constituent companies. Driven by the ongoing escalation of tensions between the US and Iran that has disrupted oil supply, international oil prices surged to above $119 per barrel this Monday, hitting a new high since mid-2022. Goldman Sachs noted that although the direct impact of a modest rise in oil prices on S&P 500 earnings is relatively limited, a long-term severe interruption of oil supply would bring significant downside risks to US equities. The firm estimates that in 2025, investments in artificial intelligence and AI cloud services accounted for about 25% of S&P 500 earnings-per-share growth, and that contribution ratio would rise to about 40% in 2026.
