Ask AI · Why can severe convective weather break the classroom windows at Guangzhou University?
On March 30, Guangzhou saw severe convective weather. Several students from Guangzhou University posted on social media saying that classroom windows were damaged by strong winds, causing some students to be injured. One posting student said the incident occurred in a classroom in the North Science Building, where the entire classroom had noticeable vibration and echoes. “Glass shards are all over the floor.”
The reporter consulted Guangzhou University’s Logistics Service Office as a student. Staff responsible for daily maintenance at the University Town campus said that personnel were already handling the scene, and the injured student had been taken to the hospital.
According to @Guangdong Weather, from March 30 to 31, in areas of northern Guangdong and counties/cities in the northern part of the Pearl River Delta, heavy rain occurred and in some places there were downpours or torrential rains, accompanied by strong convective weather such as short-duration winds of level 8 to 10 and hail.
On March 30, a netizen posted that the Guangdong Science Center’s roof was “blown into a mess of hair” by the heavy rain.
At noon on March 30, the Guangdong Science Center issued a temporary closure notice stating that due to severe convective winds and downpours, the outer aluminum panels on the main hall roof were partially damaged, and reinforcement and repair work would be carried out. To ensure visitors’ safety, after study, it was decided that the center would be temporarily closed for one week starting immediately. After repairs are completed, it will reopen. Residents and visitors who have already purchased tickets for the coming days or movie tickets can process refunds according to the refund procedures on the ticket-purchasing platforms.
