U.S. report calls for targeted sanctions against Indian intelligence agencies and others; New Delhi criticizes the U.S. for "distorting the image"
The Hindustan Times, citing a statement from India’s Ministry of External Affairs on the 16th, said that in its latest annual report, the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom has “distorted and selectively presented” India, and that the commission should not criticize India based on “ideological narratives.” The report said India is responsible for multiple cases involving violations of religious freedom, and called on the U.S. government to impose “targeted sanctions” on India’s intelligence agencies, among others. According to The Hindustan Times, a spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs, Jaishankar, issued a statement late on the evening of the 16th saying: “For years, the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom has continued to distort and selectively portray India, relying on questionable sources of information and ideological narratives instead of objective facts. This practice of repeatedly distorting facts will only harm the commission’s own credibility.” (Global Times)
