Won't let employees take the blame. Claude's father responds to source code leak: It was an unintentional mistake.
Fast Technology April 1 news: In the past day, the hottest “gossip” in the global AI industry was the leak of the Claude source code. Developers went on a frenzy of forking, while others analyzed various tools for Cluade, and they rapidly open-sourced all kinds of tools—like it’s New Year’s.
At this moment, the ones who may be most worried are probably the employees responsible for packaging the NPM files. Causing such trouble at a big company likely means they’ll face serious consequences. However, a few hours ago, Claude’s father Boris Cherny’s response online showed real vision and didn’t throw the blame onto the employees.
He said the incident was an unintentional mistake—these things are bound to happen. The important part is to recognize that this is absolutely not a personal mistake. The problem lies in the process, (company) culture, or infrastructure.
He also explained the specific details of how the accident happened. In this case, one process was deployed manually, when it should have been automated. Their team has already made some changes for the next round of automation, and there will be more improvements in the future.
Based on his response, the employee who made the mistake seems to have kept their job (at least at the level of Boris Cherny, that appears to be the case). He also didn’t shift responsibility onto the individual employee. Boris Cherny’s reflection is focused on process issues, and he mentioned improvement plans. In the future, it’s clear that carefully designed AI will handle this release process to avoid human error.
But this doesn’t mean Anthropic is just going to shrug off this source code leak incident. In fact, over the course of the day, they already took swift action—sending a large number of DMCA takedown requests to Github. At least more than 8,000 source-code-leak-based projects were deleted and cleared, although surely many developers will keep submitting new content.
As for the impact of this leaked source code, first of all, it definitely can’t shake Claude’s position in AI programming. It’s not that the big model was leaked. Second, the leaked source code also doesn’t necessarily mean it can boost other competitors’ capabilities. As for things in this area, those who needed to study them already did—no room for competitors to target it just because of this leak.
The biggest help is likely for some individual developers: they can learn Cluade’s way of thinking and build some better third-party tools. This, in turn, may actually strengthen everyone’s reliance on Claude for programming, because their big model and data can’t be bypassed.
