Reports say Anthropic is testing a powerful new model; cybersecurity stocks fall in response.
Friday, cybersecurity stocks fell sharply. Earlier reports said Anthropic was testing a powerful new AI model that is more advanced in cyber capabilities, while also carrying potential security risks.
On Thursday, Fortune magazine first reported the news, citing information from a publicly visible blog draft. According to the report, the new model, called Mythos, is being marketed as Anthropic’s most powerful model to date. However, due to potential cybersecurity vulnerabilities, the company plans to roll it out gradually.
Anthropic did not immediately respond to requests for comment from the media.
Affected by this news, cybersecurity stocks plunged. The iShares Cybersecurity ETF fell 3%, while market leaders CrowdStrike and Palo Alto Networks dropped 7% each. Zscaler and SentinelOne fell by more than 8%. Tenable sank nearly 11%, while Okta and Netskope both fell by more than 6%.
For a sector that was already hit by concerns about AI disruption, this is not new.
Last month, cybersecurity stocks fell after Anthropic announced new code-scanning security tools for Claude. The broader software industry also felt pressure from the innovations driven by technology.
The rise of AI and autonomous agents is changing the threat landscape, putting pressure on cybersecurity companies to keep up with increasingly complex attacks and with methods that make hacking easier to carry out.
