UN Report: Escalation of Middle East Situation Could Cause Over $190 Billion in Losses for Arab Countries

People’s Finance News, April 1 — A latest assessment report released March 31 by the United Nations Development Programme shows that recent escalation in the situation in the Middle East could cause losses of between $120 billion and $194 billion for Arab countries, equivalent to 3.7% to 6.0% of these countries’ gross domestic product. The report says that the escalation of military conflict in the Middle East has entered its 5th week, and the losses caused may exceed the cumulative GDP growth of Arab countries in 2025. It estimates that 3.6 million jobs could be lost, pushing the regional unemployment rate up by as much as 4 percentage points, and that more than 4 million people could be driven into poverty.
