Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Wednesday issued a public letter to the people of the United States, saying that Iran–US relations are one of the most deeply misunderstood relationships. He said that the Iranian people have no hostility toward other countries, including the people of the Americas, Europe, or neighboring countries, while the United States has amassed large numbers of military bases and military forces around Iran, creating a military threat to Iran. He said that the response that Iran has taken—and will continue to take—is based on lawful self-defense and restraint, and is by no means a move to start a war or commit aggression.

Pezeshkian said that the destructive impact of sanctions, war, and aggression on the lives of the Iranian people cannot be underestimated. He said that attacks on Iran’s critical infrastructure, including energy and industrial facilities, constitute war crimes, stressing that confronting the issue comes with a higher price than before and is futile.

Pezeshkian further questioned whether the United States’ current policies truly align with the core interests of “America First,” saying that the United States has effectively become an agent of Israel and that its actions to strike Iran are deeply influenced by and manipulated by the Israeli regime. He said that Israel, for its part, is trying to divert global society’s attention from the crimes it has committed in Palestine by deliberately manufacturing narratives about an Iranian threat.

Pezeshkian also invited the American public to go beyond the constraints of political rhetoric and re-examine Iran’s past, present, and vision for the future: a peace future that is not geared toward confrontation, but is built on truth, dignity, and mutual understanding. He called on the American public to look at the issue beyond appearances of words, hoping that Americans will not be misled by the rhetoric of President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
