In the context of a war between the United States and Israel against Iran that has led to a surge in fuel prices, Egypt will take energy-saving measures, including reducing streetlight illumination and closing shops and cafes early.

Cairo, known as the “city that never sleeps,” starting from Saturday, most retailers and operating venues will, for five days each week, be required to close by 9 p.m.

Neon advertising billboards will be shut down, government office buildings will let staff go early, and several infrastructure projects that consume large amounts of diesel will be put on hold.

Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said that the country’s monthly natural gas import bill has risen from $560 million before the conflict to $1.65 billion, doubling. He said the government is considering requiring people to work from home one to two days per week.
