A report for 2025 released by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) on the 26th shows that NATO member countries are continuing to increase their defense spending, with total NATO defense expenditures in 2025 projected to exceed $1.4 trillion. The report says that defense spending by NATO European member states and Canada has “grown significantly,” and that their defense spending in 2025 will reach $574 billion—up 20% year over year. The report adds that in 2025, all NATO member countries have met or exceeded the original target of spending at least 2% of their gross domestic product on defense. Among them, several countries significantly increased their defense spending: in 2025, Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia achieved NATO’s newly set goal—allocating 3.5% of GDP to core defense spending. In June 2025, at a summit in The Hague, the Netherlands, attended by NATO member state leaders, they unanimously decided to raise annual defense spending to 5% of GDP by 2035, with 3.5% devoted to core military expenditures and 1.5% to protecting critical infrastructure and cyber security, among other areas.
