On March 31, U.S. President Trump stated in an interview with the New York Post that Iranian Parliament Speaker Ghalibaf is one of the Iranian officials communicating with the U.S. regarding ending the war. When asked if Ghalibaf could be trusted in cooperating with Washington, Trump replied, ‘We’ll see.’ He also mentioned that he would provide details about a week later. On Sunday, Trump told the Financial Times that Ghalibaf had been authorized to allow tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Trump interpreted this action as Ghalibaf’s willingness to make concessions to reach an agreement to end the war. Ghalibaf has denied having any negotiations with the U.S., but experts indicate that he is a hardliner capable of reaching an agreement. According to the Wall Street Journal, Ghalibaf is one of the two Iranian officials temporarily removed from the ‘death list’ by the U.S. and Israel.
