Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said the United States has been seeking to take control of the Nord Stream “Nord Stream” natural gas pipeline in the Baltic Sea. The pipeline was mysteriously damaged by an explosion in September 2022.

The explosion that occurred more than three years ago destroyed those pipelines, cutting off to a large extent Russia’s ability to supply natural gas to Europe, squeezing the energy supply of the European mainland, even though Russia had already largely stopped deliveries at the time.

Both Russia and Western countries said the incident was a deliberate act of sabotage. Investigators spent years trying to identify who was behind it. Last year, a Ukrainian man was arrested in Italy for allegedly coordinating the attack.

On Thursday, Lavrov said in an interview with the French television network that the United States has been trying to dominate global energy markets, citing Venezuela and Iran as examples. The United States, in effect, has placed Venezuela—home to the world’s largest oil reserves—under its control.

According to the transcript of the interview published by Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lavrov said, “The United States is still saying now that it wants to take over the Nord Stream pipeline.” But he did not provide any details.

In 2024, media reported that an American investor, Stephen P. Lynch, was seeking to buy the twin-track Nord Stream 2 pipeline, with one line intact.
