When responding to questions about concerns raised by Europe and others regarding rising fuel prices and increasing Gulf shipping costs, Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Baghaiy on March 30 local time said that Iran is not responsible for the current situation and does not want people in other countries to shoulder pressure due to higher fuel or food prices. Baghaiy also said that, given Iran has been subjected to missile attacks and bombing, it is not reasonable to focus solely on the price issue, and that such concerns should be directed toward the party responsible for causing the current situation.

Baghaiy said that before the recent escalation of the situation, the Strait of Hormuz had not been closed. Iran has long provided security for shipping in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. He pointed out that the current situation stems from the military actions of the United States and Israel. Under wartime conditions, any coastal country would not allow “enemy vessels” to pass normally through the relevant waters, because those ships could be used to carry out hostile actions. Baghaiy also said that currently, the Iranian side manages passage of vessels that do not belong to the hostile side while ensuring security. In the past few days, some vessels have transited the Strait of Hormuz after coordinating with the Iranian authorities. Baghaiy emphasized that resolving the problem of blocked passage through the Strait of Hormuz lies in facing the true root cause that has led to this situation.
