On March 20, the 11th China Energy Development and Innovation Conference was held in Beijing, where the “International Hydrogen Energy Technology and Industrial Development Research Report 2026” was released. The report points out that the global hydrogen energy industry is currently on the eve of scaling up, and that countries’ development paths show clear divergence. According to incomplete statistics, as of December 2025, 66 countries and regions, including Japan, the United States, and China, have issued hydrogen energy strategies.
At present, China, backed by the world’s most complete new-energy industrial system and the leading scale of renewable energy installed capacity, has built a full industrial chain spanning hydrogen production, storage and transport, and applications. It has also made breakthrough progress in areas such as electrolyzer manufacturing and commercial vehicle applications, becoming the undeniable “scale frontrunner” in the global hydrogen energy industry.
However, in “soft power” dimensions such as the durability of basic materials, core technologies for key equipment, storage and transport infrastructure, and the development of international standards, China is still in a catch-up phase. Meanwhile, there is a clear mismatch between China’s huge manufacturing capacity and a relatively weak storage-and-transport network, as well as between rapidly expanding green hydrogen projects and international certification systems. If this structural contradiction cannot be effectively resolved, it will constrain China from upgrading from a “scale advantage” to a truly “industrial advantage.” (Jiemian News reporter Tian Heqi)
