【Caixin Network】 The United States has launched a tit-for-tat tariff war aimed at the world, posing a “life-or-death” threat to the multilateral trading system. Reforming the World Trade Organization (WTO) should, therefore, treat resolving this issue as a core agenda item. At the “Peking University Shenzhen Forum 2026,” held on March 28, former Deputy Director-General of the WTO, former Ambassador of China to the WTO, and former Deputy Minister of Commerce Yi Xiaozhun delivered the above views.

Yi Xiaozhun said that over the more than 70 years since the establishment of the multilateral trading system, the overarching direction of WTO reform has consistently been to promote trade liberalization and facilitation. But at this stage, as globalization has “receded,” trade protectionism is surging. WTO reform could be used by some countries to advance trade protectionism and put globalization into reverse.
