[Caixin] The 2026 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit will be held in China. On March 25, former Singaporean Foreign Minister George Yeo stated during the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2026 that zero-sum games are spreading in many parts of the world, and he hopes that China, as the host of APEC, will set an optimistic tone and bring about positive-sum thinking.

In 2001 and 2014, China hosted the APEC summits in Shanghai and Beijing, respectively. George Yeo particularly mentioned that when the APEC summit was held in Shanghai in 2001, the atmosphere was tense when U.S. government officials first attended, but as dialogues began, the atmosphere gradually eased. Now, the Asia-Pacific region finds itself in a tense atmosphere once again, and it is again China’s turn to play a role at the summit.
