Local time today (March 30) in the early morning, the Israeli parliament finally passed the national budget for 2026 with a narrow margin, which features a huge proportion of military expenditure and a total amount that sets a historic high. This allows the Netanyahu government to avoid early elections. Current polls show that Netanyahu’s ruling party will lose in the elections. Due to the delay in passing the budget proposal, Israel has been operating on a pro-rated basis of the 2025 budget since the beginning of this year. The Israeli parliament approved nearly 850.6 billion new shekels (approximately 1.8677 trillion RMB) in government spending for the fiscal year 2026. This includes over 621.7 billion new shekels for the regular budget and over 228.8 billion new shekels for the development and capital budget. Among these, the military expenditure budget alone exceeds 142 billion new shekels (approximately 311.8 billion RMB), setting a historic high. Before the vote, the opposition party held more than 14 hours of debate, during which the session was interrupted multiple times due to alerts of Iranian ballistic missile attacks, forcing lawmakers to leave the parliament hall for shelter.
